HDS Theater Department
Debuts with "No Rules Club"

The Hebrew Day School's new Theater Department presented their first offering to a standing-room-only crowd this past month in the JCC Auditorium in Maitland. Pictured above are cast members, comprised of 5th through 8th grade students.

"The No Rules Club," is a musical by Rob Cohen, who has been writing plays for school-age children for almost ten years. Cohen chooses universal themes in today's world with which the students can identify. "I enjoy the challenge of combining story, music and lyrics to match the inquisitive and optimistic nature of young children," states Cohen.

The HDS production was performed after five months of preparation, under the direction of HDS faculty members Deirdre Axel and Reba Gordon. Both Axel and Gordon have extensive theatrical experience as actors, choreographers and instructors. "This was a great experience for all," says Gordon, who mentioned that most students had little-to-no acting experience. "The cast worked very hard to memorize lines, learn songs and dance steps, while having lots of fun along the way."

Both Axel and Gordon enjoyed working with Cohen, whose unique selling point is to adapt scripts to fit specific casting needs. "All my plays have a lot of flexibility built in to allow room for your own creativity in staging and interpretation."

Axel looks towards a very promising future for the HDS Theater Department. "Next year our plans are to build on our success by getting bigger and better, as we offer Theater to fourth through eighth grade students. We will incorporate acting classes, stage production, and set design into a year-long curriculum."
